Only army gets back on right lane

Bangladesh Army has regretted that its vehicles drove through the wrong side of a road in the capital.

The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) yesterday issued a press release in this regard after The Daily Star published photographs in its Tuesday issue, showing army vehicles taking to the wrong side of the road in front of Ruposhi Bangla Hotel.

Although the report titled "People obey law, influentials break: People suffer in tailbacks, they don't" mentioned some other influential quarters also doing the same, only the army responded to it.

In the press release, the Army Headquarters said it would take appropriate steps against such malpractices.

“Being a disciplined force, Bangladesh Army is always respectful to the laws of the country. As such, Army Headquarters assures to undertake due measures against such anomalies,” said the press release.

The Daily Star report showed how ministers, lawmakers, police personnel, ruling party leaders and journalists flout traffic rules at will.

Shortly after the news was posted on The Daily Star's Facebook page yesterday, it received a huge response from the users. In less than four hours, the post was shared on the social media platform more than 100 times.

Several users regretted that those who themselves are supposed to ensure law enforcement "turned law breakers", and called for a change. "If the ordinary people are ready to wait in the queue, why shouldn't the influentials comply with the rules?" a user commented.

Even yesterday, many vehicles used by people of different influential sections of the society were found indiscriminately breaking traffic rules on city streets.
