When a bump leads to altercation, murder: 6 minors arrested

They are all aged below 13, living in the city's Kamrangirchar area.

While walking on the street last night, one of the six boys stumbled into 14-year-old Sifat coming from the opposite direction and tripped -- leading to an altercation.

The group of six was infuriated with Sifat. One of them (aged 12) asked another (10) to bring his knife. They beat up Sifat and subsequently stabbed him to death.

Police today said this after arresting the six children from different areas in connection with the murder which happened last night in Kamrangirchar's Barishal Colony area.

Mostafa Anwar, inspector (Investigation) of Kamrangirchar Police Station, said the murder happened over a trivial matter.

The accused were going to a mechanic's shop after sound system at a birthday celebration -- hosted at one of boys' home -- malfunctioned.

On the way, one of them stumbled into the victim and tripped, which led to an altercation and the murder, he said.

Sifat, a worker at a local shoe factory, was stabbed in his thigh around 6:00pm yesterday and was lying there for some time.

Later, a van-puller took him to Mitford Hospital from where he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Sifat died around 10:00pm, police said.

Sifat's uncle Abdur Rahman said he was abandoned by his parents in early childhood. His mother moved away and father married another woman. He used to live with his grandfather in Kamrangirchar area.

Police said the 12-year-old arrestee, who stabbed Sifat, fell from a building nearly one year ago and sustained critical injuries. He survived but doctors then advised him family members to be extremely cautious about not getting hurt.
