Singapore ensuring Bangladeshi workers are paid, have access to healthcare

Though all activities, except for the emergency ones, have remained suspended due to coronavirus pandemic, Singapore is committed to making sure all workers, including Bangladeshis, have their wages paid on regular basis and that they have access to healthcare.

That was the message Singapore's Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan conveyed to Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen during a phone conversation on Thursday, said a foreign ministry statement.

Of the total 1,481 cases of Covid-19 in Singapore, 244 are Bangladeshi migrant workers. There are around two lakh Bangladeshis, mostly working in the construction sector.

All of those infected plus some other suspected cases have been quarantined.

Balakrishnan told Momen that Singapore has been providing free food and treatment to those infected by the virus.

Of the five Bangladeshis infected in the initial stage, four have recovered, and the one who was in critical condition is now improving, the statement said.
