Helal Ahmed Chowdhury joins Bank Asia as independent director

Helal Ahmed Chowdhury, former managing director and CEO of Pubali Bank, has recently joined Bank Asia Ltd as an independent director.

A seasoned banker with over four decades of banking experience, Helal Ahmed Chowdhury started his career at Pubali Bank in 1977 as a Class-I Officer through Superior Service Examination. In the course of time he rose up the ranks to be promoted to MD and CEO (2006-2014) at the same bank, which is a rare event and record.

Under his dynamic leadership, Pubali Bank transformed into an institutional role model of government-turned-privately run commercial bank and won the prestigious award "Best Financial Institution" of the country given by DHL and The Daily Star in 2009.

He also served as an independent director of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd and presided over as the Chairman of Audit and Risk Management Committees of the bank in different times.

Helal Chowdhury is a general body member of Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), an independent director of Baraka Power Ltd, Baraka Patenga Power Ltd and a member of the ICC Banking Commission He is also engaged with a number of social organisations and trade bodies at different capacities and is working as a resource person in different trainings/seminars.

An MA and a Diplomaed Associate of the Institute of Bankers, Bangladesh IBB, Helal Chowdhury participated in different trainings, seminars, short and long courses both at home and abroad including Oxford and Cambridge universities in the UK, and UC Berkeley and Columbia University of the USA.

He was also a supernumerary professor of Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM), a board member and vice chairman of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) and a board member of BIBM.
