Covid-19 outbreak: India sees 6,535 new cases since Monday

The total number of coronavirus across India today rose to 1,45,380, registering an increase of 6,535 cases since Monday, the health ministry said.

The number of active Covid-19 cases climbed to 80,722 with 60,490 people having recovered, recording around a 41.61 per cent recovery rate, a ministry official said.

A total of 146 deaths have been reported since Monday morning pushing the toll to 4,167.

Of the 146 new deaths, 60 were in the worst-hit state of Maharashtra, 30 in adjacent Gujarat, 15 in Delhi, 10 in Madhya Pradesh, seven in Tamil Nadu, six in West Bengal, four each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, three in Telangana, two each in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka and one in Kerala.

Of the total 4,167 fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 1,695 deaths followed by Gujarat (888), Madhya Pradesh (300), West Bengal (278), Delhi (276), Rajasthan (167), Uttar Pradesh (165), Tamil Nadu (118) and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 56 deaths each.

According to the ministry data updated in the morning, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country is from Maharashtra at 52,667 followed by Tamil Nadu at 17,082, Gujarat at 14,460, Delhi at 14,053, Rajasthan at 7,300, Madhya Pradesh at 6,859 and Uttar Pradesh at 6,532.

The number of Covid-19 cases has gone up to 3,816 in West Bengal, 3,110 in Andhra Pradesh and 2,730 in Bihar.

Assam recorded its highest single-day spike of 156 cases on Monday, taking the total past the 500-mark, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

With these fresh cases, the total number of Covid-19 infectons has gone up to 548 in the state, of which 479 are active cases, Sarma said.

Sarma said most of the latest Covid-19 cases are returnees from outside the state.

After inter-state movement through road and rail networks was allowed during the lockdown period, Assam saw a significant increase in Covid-19 cases.

With domestic flight operations resuming to Assam from Monday, the health officials are expecting this spike to be even sharper in the coming days.
