Banks warned against funding militancy

State Minister for Finance M Abdul Mannan today told the parliament that the government would take stern actions against banks concerned if the allegation of funding militancy is proved.

Speaking on behalf of Finance Minister AMA Muhith during a question and answer session, Mannan said, “If we get specific allegation against any bank, we will take actions against the bank after an investigation.”

Treasury Bench Whip Shahiduzzaman Sarker in his question alleged that some identified banks including Islami Bank Bangladesh had been financing militancy and anti-state activities in the name of Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).

“The CSR activities have been suspended as Bangladesh Bank is working to formulate a specific guideline to bring transparency in CSR activities,” said the state minister.

Responding to another question, Mannan said the country’s economy is on the right track despite violent activities by the BNP-Jamaat alliance.

“The government will be able to achieve its targets by overcoming all obstacles,” he said.
