7 to die for killing AL man

A Dhaka court today sentenced seven people to death and another to life term imprisonment for killing an Awami League man in 2006.

Hazi Moniruddin Monu, member of Awami League ward No.12 unit, was gunned down on August 15 in 2006.

Judge ABM Nizamul Haque of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 awarded death penalty to Md Shahadat, Md Mintu, Masudur Rahman Tota, Noman Ibne Bashar, Liton Hossain Lotus, Mahinur Rahman Sohel and Md Hasan Sarwar.

The court sentenced life term imprisonment to one Jahanara.

Among the accused, Sohel and Sarwar are now in jail while the rest remains absconding.

Eight extortionists gunned down Monu in Mirpur-12 of Dhaka during a programme organised on the occasion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s death anniversary as he refused to pay Tk 1 crore extortion to them.
