A worker was killed and four others were injured in a landslide while cutting a hill for construction of a road in Siddique Nagar area of Bandarban Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jakaria, 24, a resident of Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar district.
Locals and witnesses said a group of 8/10 workers were cutting a hill for the construction of Siddique Nagar-Kachingpara road under a project of Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board (CHTDB).
Around 11:40am, all of a sudden, a big chunk of earth fell on the workers, leaving Jakaria dead on the spot and four others injured.
Locals took the injured to Bandarban Sadar Hospital. Of them, Md Jahan, 30, of Banorupa Para in the upazila, was shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.
Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Imtiaz Ahmed, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
Hafizur Rahman, headmaster of Siddique Nagar Kadija Wahid Government Primary School, adjacent to the hill, alleged that the workers engaged by the contractor cut the hill slope up to 40 feet height and it poses risk to the locals and the students and teachers of the school.
Contacted, Abdul Aziz, executive engineer of CHTDB in Bandarban, said the contractor was asked to cut hill slope up to 10 feet in height, but he cut much more, defying the hill cutting rule.
After the incident, the district administration stopped the construction work and asked the local people to move to a safer place.
