Mexican mayor weds crocodile for town's prosperity

The mayor of a small fishing town in southern Mexico has married a crocodile as part of a local custom that dates back to 1789.

Victor Aguilar, mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, got hitched to a fairly small reptile on June 30, as part of an indigenous tradition supposed to bring good fortune to local fishermen, according to The Huffington Post.

In the strictly symbolic ceremony, the mayor represents the prince of the Chontales, while the crocodile represents the princess of the Huaves. Tradition has it that the two indigenous groups battled over fishing rights until a Chontal prince fell in love with a Huave princess, Huff Post reports quoting CNN.

After the ceremony, there's more music and dancing, including a dance between reptile and groom.

The wedding is part of festivities in honor of Saint Peter, the town's patron saint, reports CNN.

After the nuptials, the couple did enjoy a first dance. Media reports don't mention what happened to the crocodile after that, says the report in The Huffington Post.
