A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of Chittagong University unit yesterday beat up an Awami League leader on the campus.
The victim is Nasir Haider Babul, assistant secretary of a central sub-committee of the AL.
He said some BCL activists had beaten him, torn his shirt, and put a garland of shoes around his neck without any reason, when he was about to enter the central library around 11:45am to attend a programme on late vice-chancellor of the university Prof Abu Yusuf.
The BCL activists, also members of shuttle train-based group Varsity Express (VX), were accompanying metropolitan AL President ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury on his way to the library to attend the same programme, witnesses said.
Nasir, also former general secretary of CU unit of the BCL, said he could not identify the attackers in person.
Mamunul Haque, president of BCL CU unit, said he had heard that some of the junior activists of the student organisation were involved in the attack.
They will take action against the attackers if found guilty, he added.
Witnesses said police were deployed on the spot during the attack, but did not rescue the victim when being beaten and harassed by the BCL men.
However, Sub-inspector Md Mainuddin of the CU police outpost said he was not aware of the incident.
Contacted, ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury said he did not know anything about the attack. Nobody informed him about the incident during his stay on the campus, he added.
