Nor'westers kill 4 in 2 dists

35 injured, over 700 houses damaged

At least four people were killed, 35 injured and over 700 houses damaged as nor'westers lashed Chapainawabganj, Faridpur and Gaibandha districts yesterday and the day before.
Two people were killed and 10 others injured during storm in Shibganj and Gomostapur upazilas in Chapainawabganj yesterday morning, reports our correspondent.
The deceased are Kawsar Ali, 12, son of Mosarraf Hossain of Chamatola village and Nioti Rani Pramanik, 22, daughter of Anil Chandra Pramanik of Ranibari-Chandpur village in Shibganj upazila.
Of the injured, four were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.
In Shibganj, the storm lashed Chakkirti, Binodpur and Durlovpur unions, killing two people and injuring two others around 7:00am, said locals.
A tree collapsed on Kawsar Ali, leaving him dead on the spot when he was going to a mango orchard near his house for collecting the fruits, said Mohbul Hossain, chairman of Binodpur union parishad.
Nioti Rani was killed by lightning while she was returning home from a mango orchard at Ranibari-Chandpur village during the storm, said Sarwar-e-Alam, chairman of Chakkirti UP.
 The storm also uprooted 200 mango trees and damaged over 150 thatched houses, said the chairman.
Meanwhile, eight people were injured as the storm hit several villages under Choudala, Rhonpur and Gomostapur unions in Gomostapur upazila.
Of them, two persons were admitted at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital.
The storm that swept the areas for five to seven minutes also damaged more than 50 thatched houses and uprooted over 100 trees, said upazila nirbahi officer Akhtar Mamun.
  Away in Faridpur, at least two people were killed and 20 others injured as a violent storm hit Boalmari upazila yesterday noon, reports our correspondent.
The deceased are Babul Sheikh, 44, son Mohon Pramanik of Beradi village in Satoyor union and Priya Akter, 14, of Cerapur village in the same union.
It also damaged more than 500 houses, said Khondokker Nazir, chairman of Satoyor union parishad.
Babul died as the roof of his tin shed house collapsed on him during the storm while a big tree fell on Priya, leaving her seriously injured.
She later succumbed to her injuries at Faridpur Medical College and Hospital.
In Gaibandha, at least five people were injured as a nor'wster lashed Gobindaganj municipal areas and adjoining villages on Tuesday noon.
The affected areas are Chashakpara, Kuthibari, Durgapur and Panrhapara, reports our correspondent.
The storm that lasted for about 10 minutes, damaged over 70 shops and houses and uprooted several electric poles and trees in the areas.
Rooftops of a number of educational institutes were also blown away during the storm, said locals.
