Nor’wester kills 11 in two dists

Eleven people including four of a family were killed and over 35 injured as nor’wester lashed Netrakona and Sunamganj districts last night.

Of the deceased, eight were killed in Netrakona while three in Sunamganj.

In Netrakona, a mother and her three sons, aged between 3 and 9, died on the spot when their tin-shed house fell on them at Bishampur village in Kalmakanda upazila during the storm, said Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge of local police station.

Two more people were killed in house collapse in Barhatta upazila while one each in Sadar and Mohonganj, reports our Netrakona correspondent. 

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The nor’wester that lasted for half an hour till 11:30pm yesterday also left 25 people injured and over 500 dwellings damaged in the four upazilas.

A number of trees and electric poles were also uprooted during the storm, leaving some parts of the district without electricity.

In Sunamganj, at least three people were killed and 10 injured when a storm swept over Dharmapasha upazila in the small hours of today, Devjit Singh, additional deputy commissioner of the district, confirmed The Daily Star.

One of the deceased was identified as Shamsul Haque, 65, a guard of a brick field at Mahadirpur village, while identities of the other dead could not be known immediately, reports our Sylhet correspondent quoting Fakhrul Islam, chairman of a local union parishad.

There was no electricity at different parts of the district following the storm last night.
