BNP’s new Dhaka city chief Mirza Abbas today said the Awami League government has no reason to get feared of opposition’s movement as what he said the anti-government agitation would be “peaceful and democratic”.

“But do not let loose your [the government] cadre groups and do not attack us. You will have to provide us opportunity to wage normal agitation,” Abbas said at an iftar programme at the capital’s Ladies Club.

The Dhaka Medical College Hospital unit of Doctors Association of Bangladesh, a platform of pro-BNP physicians, arranged the iftar.

This was Abbas’s maiden appearance before the public and media since the announcement of the 56-member committee of the party’s crucial chapter on July 18.

Abbas did not let any leaders and activists of BNP call on him and did not talk with the media due to his annoyance over formation of the committee.

Inclusion of Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel as his second-in-command instead of MA Quaium displeased the new boss of BNP’s Dhaka city chapter.

Besides, nearly 20 leaders loyal to Sadeque Hossain Khoka, immediate past convener of the unit were also included in the new committee which has also irked Abbas, party insiders said.

Turning to media, Abbas said he would formally talk to journalists in a day or two about the new committee.

In his brief speech, Abbas added that the AL has started shaking on the news of opposition’s upcoming movement after Eid.
