No Mushfiqur for SL T20s

No Mushfiqur for SL T20s

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim was not considered for the two-match T20 series against the visiting Sri Lanka due to an injury on his little finger. The selectors announced a 15-member squad yesterday for the series without the wicketkeeper-batsman as a precautionary measure ahead of two big multinational events -- the Asia Cup and ICC World Twenty20 at home.
Mushfiqur had to dive to his right and hurt himself during an awkward take down the leg side on the first day of the second Test at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. An X-ray report showed that he has suffered a small fracture without any displacement on his left hand. He did not take the field yesterday and Shamsur Rahman did the job behind the stumps as a makeshift wicketkeeper.
“As per the team physio's advice we have decided not to consider him for T20 matches against Sri Lanka. We don't want to take any risk in the long run because we have plenty of cricket coming up. There is the Asia Cup, and the T20 World Cup, so there is no way we can take the risk,” said chief selector Faruque Ahmed.
“But if you ask me whether he will bat tomorrow or not then I would say that we will try, through an injection or any other arrangement, to give him temporary relief and make him bat. We can take this risk. But we believe that if he gets rest it will help to ensure his service for the two big events in the future,” he said, adding that Mushfiqur may also be rested for the ODI series against Sri Lanka if needed.
The former skipper said that the board will later decide who will lead the team in the two T20I matches to take place at the same venue on February 12 and February 14. According to sources, although Tamim Iqbal is the vice-captain, Mahmudullah Riyad is in contention to be stand-in captain and Shakib Al Hasan's name also came up.
The selectors drafted some new faces eyeing the next T20 World Cup including Sabbir Rahman and Arafat Sunny, who replaced veteran Abdur Razzak who is rapidly recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during the first day's play.
“Both Sunny and Sabbir have proved their ability in the domestic level. Now we want to see how good they are in the international level. Forhad Reza is now in good form and he is an experienced player, so we hope he can contribute in the T20 matches,” explained Faruque.
