No alternative to movement: Fakhrul
BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the “illegal” government is snatching away people’s rights by enacting various acts and formulating policies like National Broadcast Policy-2014 to cling to power forever.
He threatened to go for a tougher movement to oust the government saying: “There is no alternative to staging all-out movement to realise the demands."
The alliance has been waging movement for a long time demanding parliamentary elections under a non-party caretaker government.
The acting secretary general of BNP was addressing a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan protesting the newly formulated broadcast policy with Mirza Abbas, convener of Dhaka City unit of the party, in the chair.
Khaleda Zia, head of the BNP-led 20-party alliance, who was scheduled to address the rally as chief guest, did not show up on health grounds.
"Earlier, Awami League had snatched away people's rights by introducing one-party BKSAL. It had stopped all newspapers except four. Today, the party is heading towards the same direction to prolong its immoral and illegal regime," Fakhrul said.
AL attacks on the media whenever it comes to power. After assuming the power in 1996, the party had stopped the publication of three to four newspapers.
This time, it has suspended several print and electronic media including Diganta and Islamic TV channels and the daily Amar Desh, he added.
The BNP leader also criticised the government for its move to bring another amendment to the constitution, empowering parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges.
There is no people's representation in the parliament as less than 5 percent people cast their votes in the January 5 general election, he said.
"So, it would be Awami League's political decision if judges are impeached by the present parliament," he opined.
BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Rafiqul Islam Mia, Abdul Moeen Khan and other leaders of the alliance also spoke at the rally.
