Wage board by this week

The government will form a new minimum wage board for garment workers within this week.
Mikail Shipar, secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, yesterday said, “We have asked for names of the owners' representatives from the BGMEA and BKMEA today [yesterday] so that we can form the board within this week.”
Labour and Employment Minister Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, earlier in the day during a meeting at the Secretariat, discussed with the leaders of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association how the new wage board could be formed.
As per the rules, the new board would be formed comprising six members including a chairman who is a government representative, two representatives from factory owners, two from workers and an independent member, Shipar said.
“We will submit the names of the owners' representatives to the ministry by tomorrow [Wednesday],” said BGMEA President Atiqul Islam.
On May 11, Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique in a meeting announced the formation of a new wage structure for the garment workers in the wake of labour unrest at Ashulia area over better pay.
The third wage structure came into effect on November 1, 2010, when the minimum salary of garment workers was increased to Tk 3,000 per month from Tk 1,662.50 per month.
