Two drown as bridal party boat capsizes

Two minor girls drowned as a boat carrying a bridal party capsized in the Meghna River at Lalpur village under Ashuganj upazila on Wednesday night.
The deceased were identified as Nijhum Akter, 7, daughter of Asadullah and Tajnia Akter, 7, daughter of Shamim Mia of Birganj village in Nabinagar upazila in the district.
According to eyewitnesses, a boat carrying 45 members of a bridal party was returning with the bride to Nabinagar from Lalpur village after the marriage ceremony between Bipasha Akter and Swapon Sarker.
After a while, a big sand laden trawler hit the boat in the Meghna causing it to capsize in the mid river.
All the passengers but the two girls saved themselves by swimming ashore. Later, the fishermen found the bodies of Nijhum and Tajnia.
