Truck torched in Barisal

Miscreants set fire to a goods-laden truck on Dhaka-Barisal highway in Barisal city early today.

None was reported hurt in the arson which took place during the second day of the BNP-led 18-party opposition-sponsored countrywide 72-hour blockade of roads, rail and waterways.

Meanwhile, in Lalmonirhat crackdown on the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, the joint forces arrested nine criminals early today on charges of railway sabotage during the recent spate of hartal and blockade in Patgram upazila of the district.

The detainees were involved in the Jamaat-Shibir politics, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting Sohrab Hossain, officer-in-charge of Patgram Police Station.

The opposition combine announced the blockade demanding cancellation of parliamentary polls schedule and holding election under a non-party government.
