Tanvir Mokammel's “1971” and “Lal Shalu” to be screened in Kolkata

Few film directors in Bangladesh have been as involved with the country's Liberation War as Tanvir Mokammel. Almost all his feature films are based on different facets or impacts of the war. So it is not surprising that come March 23, the screening of director Tanvir Mokammel's mega documentary “1971” at Kolkata's cultural landmark Gorky Sadan will mark celebrations of Bangladesh's Independence Day.

Mokammel, who will be present there on the occasion, will also speak on “The Role of Soviet Union and India in Bangladesh's Liberation War”.

The Bangladeshi Deputy High Commissioner Abida Sultana will be the special guest at the event being organised by Eisenstein Cine Club.

Mokammel will again be the toast of film aficionados and intellectuals at the Bengali literature department of Kolkata's Jadavpur University on April 10, when he will speak on “Literature in Bangladeshi Cinema”. The speech will be followed by the screening of the director's feature film “Lal Shalu” based on Syed Waliullah's classic novel.

Mokammel told The Daily Star that he will be in India for three weeks and would utilise rest of his time editing his latest feature film “Jibondhuli”, also set against the backdrop of the Liberation War.
