Soundcity'13 Berlin ClubNacht

Thinking about the generic  rock shows and trying to break the vicious cycle of clapping after 10 Coldplay covers in a row followed by apologies, I walked into Goethe Institute which hosted LiveSquare's Electronic music event: SoundCity'13: Berlin ClubNacht. Opening the show was DJ Farzan with his Trance music setlist. After a slow start to the show where the audience were rather shy about moving, they slowly unwound themselves thanks to Farzan showing what music is all about—Enjoyment. He was moving to the music and letting the audience know it's cool to dance and feel the music. People gradually began to wiggle(exactly what you're thinking), and all of a sudden the wiggling turned into a circle in the middle of the crowd where a group of punjabi-clad men actually started dancing.  Farzan was really making the stage move but as he finished his tracks, we had Omer Nashaad. Before getting up on stage, Omer was really charged up and told me that "This evening, we're either going to do something extremely messed up or something truly inspiring for fusion music". We weren't left unimpressed as he got up with a sarad player, a guitarist, a classical pianist and a tabuchi(that's a tabla player for anyone who's lost at this point). They begun with a Moushumi Bhowmik cover "Shopno Dekhbo Bole" which was incorporated with loops from Omer and the tabuchi player. Next up, we had a new female and male vocalist duet who did a complete rendition of Teardrop by Massive Attack and Creep by Radiohead. This all turned out to show how fusion music could expand to uncharted territories. Next up was the trio of Misha Ali, Mohammed Abdullah and the rapper  Salauddin Kader Shimon. For me these guys were the showstoppers, Shimon really showed how anyone can enjoy some great spontaneous rapping. He shut up any critics out there who would make fun of rappers by dismissing them as musicians. Misha Ali laid down the music and we had Abdullah keeping the melody with his singing and Shimon adding in spice with the rap. Their tight performance made everyone in the crowd stand up and really shout. The tracks actually got everyone inside the venue moving. They had no other option! And finally,  the headline act of the day: Andi Teichmann. With some house music going on and the crowd dispersing, the entire place turned into a dancefloor and everyone was groovin' to Teichmann's house set. While me not being much of a dancer, I enjoyed  from a creepy corner; watching the people not give a damn about their surroundings and just float away with the music. All in all, it was a good eye-opening experience for anyone who's not into electronic music. There's more out there in the world than covers of Coldplay's Yellow.
