Russia alerts UK over Syria rebel aid
The UK and Russia are still debating over the UK's supply of arms to Syria's opposition, as Russia mentioned it as "breaching of international law," reports the UK-based newspaper The Guardian.
The UK foreign secretary, William Hague, held dialogues in London with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. Defence ministers of both countries, Philip Hammond and Sergei Shoigu respectively also attended the meeting, the newspaper added.
Last week Hague announced that Britain was increasing its support for Syria's opposition National Coalition by providing "non-lethal equipment" to rebels, with David Cameron apprising on Wednesday that "the UK might be prepared to bypass an EU arms embargo."
Lavrov said the supply of lethal weapons to the rebels would be illegal in international law.
The Kremlin has supplied large amounts of heavy weaponry to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, while the UK and other EU states have backed the Syrian opposition.
Lady Ashton, foreign policy chief of the EU said, "We should take urgent steps to end the violence, as Syria took a damage of 100,000 innocent casualties and over 1 million refugees seeking shelter in neighbouring countries."
