Murder victim's father accuses Shamim Osman family
The Narayanganj Gonojagoron Mancha convenor has accused the family of controversial Awami League leader Shamim Osman of the killing of his son.
Rafiur Rabbi came up with the accusation on Friday, nearly a week after Tanvir Mohammad Toki was found dead on the bank of the river Shitalakkhya.
He also alleged that Shamim Osman's family was trying to cover up the murder case with the help of the state minister for home, reports the Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Rabbi was addressing a mass gathering, arranged by the Citizen’s Society, in Chashara Shaheed Minar area in Narayanganj city.
He said the murder was carried out because he worked in favour of Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in the 2011 election. In the polls, Shamim Osman, a ruling party backed candidate who became a sensation for causing intimidation before the election, lost badly to Ivy.
Addressing the rally, Ivy said, “Why did you engage terrorists to kill the innocent child? Is it because his father worked in support of me during the election? If the answer is yes, then kill me. But you can’t kill me because you are simply a coward.”
Earlier on March 8, the 17-year-old brilliant student was found dead in Narayanganj two days after he had gone missing.
He had just completed his A-level from ABCInternationalSchool in Chashara area of the town.
The deceased’s father told reporters that Toki had secured an outstanding result in the A-level exams which was published a day after the boy had gone missing. He had scored 294 in chemistry and 297 in physics out of 300.
Cultural organisation Sammilito Sangskritik Jote enforced dawn-to-dusk hartal on March 9 in Narayanganj protesting the killing.
Locals spotted Tanvir’s body in Charargop area of the town around 10:15am on March 8 and informed the police. About half-an-hour later, police went to the spot and sent the body to Narayanganj GeneralHospital morgue for autopsy. Police also recovered Tanvir’s switched-off mobile phone from his pocket.
Morgue sources said the boy had been strangulated to death. His body bore several bruises on the right eye, throat and face.
Tanvir’s father Rabbi identified the body.
