Induction Ceremony for SALF EC held at the Daily Star Center

The induction ceremony for the newly elected Executive Committee of South Asian Lawyers’ Forum (SALF) took place on 4 August 2018 at the Daily Star Center. In the event, the law students of London College of Legal Studies (LCLS) north, were honored with awards for successfully participating in a day-long dialogue titled ‘Asian Dialogue on Youth Civic Engagement and Human Rights’ which was held on 18 July, 2018, at Asia Centre, Bangkok, Thailand.

This event was chaired by the President of SALF, Advocate Sheikh Salahuddin Ahmed. In his speech, Mr. Ahmed, gave an overview of the rationale behind SALF, the progress of the association, its aims and objectives and spoke about the role which can be played by the young lawyers.

The Chief Guest of the event was Mr. Justice A.H.M. Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former Justice of Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He conveyed his best wishes to the newly elected Executive Committee of SALF and went on to describe the current condition in Bangladesh necessitating advocacy for protecting human rights. He specifically focused on the on-going crisis in respect of road accidents and urged for adoption of stricter measures by the Government.

Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman was invited as a Chief Speaker. Professor Mizan spoke about the  persisting national issues of the present time and shed light upon some possible way forwards to deal with the same. He emphasised that besides developing personal skills and competence as a lawyer, young lawyers need to play a pioneering role for everyone in the society. Amongst others, Advocate Abdur Rahman Howladar, former General Secretary of Dhaka Bar Association; Advocate Abdur Rahman Howladar; Sheikh Hafizur Rahman Karzon, Professor of law, University of Dhaka, and Human Rights Activist Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua were present in the occasion as special guests.

On behalf of South Asian Lawyers’ Forum, Advocate Monirul Islam Akash, Advocate Jahidul Haque Babu, Advocate Md. Bashiruddin, Advocate Md Alamgir Khan, Head of Media & Advocacy Mr. Abdullah Al Noman, Head of Foreign Affairs Barrister Arunav Das Shuvro and Advocate Tajedul Islam Khokhn (Mymensingh bar) spoke to the audience.
