Jamuna Group chairman, family sued for dodging tax

Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul, his wife advocate Salma Ali and their son Shamim Islam were sued yesterday for dodging over Tk 45.31 crore in income tax.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday filed seven cases against the trio with a Dhaka court on charge of dodging Tk 4,53,12,888 in income tax from fiscal year 2007-08 to 2011-12.
Three deputy tax commissioners -- Ataul Haque, Zahirul Islam and Dipak Kumar Chakraborty -- of the NBR filed the cases with the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka.
The court fixed May 26 to hold a hearing on whether the charge will be taken into cognisance.
In the case statement, the complainants said as chairman and managing directors, the trio evaded paying income tax.
The complainants also said the accused did not submit their wealth statements of Tk 155,19,14,230 in their tax returns.
The accused had repeatedly provided false information about their real income and expenditure, alleged the NBR statement.
