ILO delegation to visit Savar

A delegation of International Labour Organisation (ILO) is arriving in here on International Labour Day, May 1, to talk about working environment and labourers’ rights and visit the site of Savar building collapse.

The visit comes days after Wednesday’s deadly crumbling of nine-storey Rana Plaza that left at least 381 dead and hundreds injured.

Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, deputy director general for field operations and partnership, ILO, will lead the four-member delegation during the four-day visit, Fazlul Haque, president of Bangladesh Employers Federation, told reporters during a press briefing at Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry building Monday.

The team will also sit with the two associations of garment owners — Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Rana Plaza, which housed five garment factories, a branch of Brac Bank and a shopping mall, caved in turning the spotlight again on poor working conditions of the country’s RMG factories.
