HC denies bail to Shamim Osman
The High Court on Monday refused bail to Shamim Osman, a former Awami League MP from Narayanganj, and his son in a case filed for killing a student, Tanvir Mohammad Toki.
Rafiur Rabbi, father of the victim; Selina Hayat Ivy, mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation; and some citizens blamed Shamim and his two brothers for their alleged link with the murder.
Father of the victim filed a first information report with Narayanganj Model Police Station following the recovery of Toki's body on March 8.
A HC vacation bench of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Md Badruzzaman also returned the bail petition to the counsels of Shamim and his son Ayon Osman on Monday.
During the hearing of the petition, Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore told the lawyers of the accused that their client Shamim does not need the anticipatory bail.
"Police are not going to arrest you, because you held a press briefing and claimed that you are not involved in the murder. So, you do not need an anticipatory bail," the justice said.
Syed Ahmed Raja, lawyer for the accused, told The Daily Star that they will move the bail petition before a regular bench after reopening of the High Court.
The HC is on a 15-day spring vacation starting from March 15.
Shamim and his son filed the petition with the HC on Sunday seeking anticipatory bail in Toki murder case.
In the petition, they claimed that they were not involved in the killing as they were abroad when the murder took place.
The petitioners appeared before the HC bench during the bail hearing.
Father of the victim and also the convener of Narayanganj Gonojagoron Mancha, filed a first information report with Narayanganj Model Police Station on March 8.
The body of Toki was found on the bank of Shitalakkhya river on March 8, two days after he went missing.
Toki was a brilliant student who recently completed his A Level with astonishing results.
Earlier on March 18, Rafiur submitted a written complaint to the superintendent of Narayanganj police naming seven suspects, including former lawmaker Shamim Osman and his son Ayon Osman, in connection with the murder.
