Hall-Mark chairman denied bail

Jasmine Islam

The High Court on Tuesday rejected a bail petition of Jasmine Islam, the chairman of Hall-Mark Group, in 11 corruption cases.

A HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Hoque passed the order after hearing the petition filed by Jasmine on Monday.

The court said it would not grant bail to Jasmine until the Hall-Mark authorities submit its wealth statement.

The same bench last month directed the authorities concerned of Hall-Mark Group to submit its wealth statement before the court by April 20.

Jasmine was sent to jail on February 19, hours after she had surrendered before a Dhaka court in the 11 cases.

On February 7, Jasmine was granted bail by a lower court condition that she and her company would repay Tk 2,600 crore, which her company has swindled, to Sonali Bank.

The court however cancelled Jasmine's bail in the 11 corruption cases filed by the ACC following an HC order on February 17.

According to a Bangladesh Bank investigation, Hall-Mark in collaboration with some bank officials swindled out more than Tk 2,600 crore from the Ruposhi Bangla branch of Sonali Bank using forged document.

Jasmine was shown arrested on November 6, 2012 in six of the 11 corruption cases filed by the ACC in connection with a loan scam.

On October 4 last year, the ACC filed 11 cases against 27 top officials of Sonali Bank and the Hall-Mark Group for the loan scam.
