Govt to change law for stringent punishment
The government will bring amendment, if necessary, in the existing law to stop recurrence of deadly incident like Savar tragedy, said Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Saturday.
“The government will also formulate a new law, if necessary after scrutinising the present one,” the minister told reporters during a press briefing at Jatiya Press Club in the capital over National Legal Aid Day on April 28.
Shafique made the comment when asked about the steps taken by the government following the Savar tragedy.
The law minister said a cell has been opened to provide workers with legal assistance, adds Prothom Alo.
Workers who would be fired without any specific reason or those who would not receive salaries properly would get help from the cell from May 1, he said.
At least 340 people were killed and a few thousands injured till Saturday noon as the nine-storey Rana Plaza collapsed in Savar on the outskirts of the capital on Wednesday.
After the building collapse, it is reported that the death occurred due to the negligence of owners of the building and proprietors of five garment factories housed in the building.
The section 304 of the penal code hands down maximum life term imprisonment to persons responsible for deaths occurred due to their negligence.
