Govt helps families of slain army officers

The families of those army officers who were killed in the 2009 BDR mutiny have got over Tk 41 lakh each and a plot or flats in the last five years from the government and other sources.
Each family received Tk 10 lakh from the prime minister's fund, Tk 5 lakh from the Army Welfare fund, and Tk 50,000 from Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB (previously Bangladesh Rifles or BDR) Welfare Fund, according to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
The Bangladesh Association of Bankers gave Tk 24 lakh to each family, while Trust Mutual Bank gave placement shares worth Tk 2 lakh to them.
A total of 57 army officials were among 74 people killed in the February 25-26 mutiny that year.
Apart from those monetary assistances, each family received funds and facilities from the family security project, DSOP Fund, grants from the Welfare Fund, and monthly pensions.
The government gave employment to 32 members from the families, of whom three were given overseas jobs. In addition, 84 family members were admitted to different educational institutions to study free. Ten children of the deceased's families entered different cadet colleges.
To ensure permanent accommodations, families of 37 officers were allotted plots at Mirpur DOHS where 10 other families got two apartments each. Earlier, 11 officers had got plots in different DOHSs or under Rajuk projects. Temporarily, 43 families were provided accommodation in Dhaka Cantonment.
