Lawyers refused permission to meet Mollah

Jail authorities did not allow defence lawyers to meet condemned Abdul Quader Mollah at Dhaka Central Jail this evening.

Barrister Abdur Razzaq, chief of the defence counsels, sent an application to the jail authorities through a junior lawyer requesting permission to meet Mollah but the jail authorities said that it is not possible now, Shishir Manir, a lawyer of Mollah, told The Daily Star.

The lawyers took the move after Hasan Jamil, eldest son of Mollah, said his father believes he will get seven days for filing mercy petition as per the law.

Mollah also wanted to meet his lawmakers to decide whether he will seek clemency from the president, Jamaat told reporters at the jail gate.

The Jamaat leader expressed his desire to meet his counsels when his family members met him at Dhaka Central Jail this evening.

Our correspondent at the jail gate said nine members of the family including his two sons, four daughters and wife entered the jail around 6:25pm and came out around 7:05pm.

The authorities gave permission to the family following a petition earlier in the afternoon.

When contacted, Mollah’s elder son Hasan Jamil told The Daily Star around 5:30pm that the family had been permitted to meet Mollah at jail.

Earlier around 3:30pm, Jamil told The Daily Stat, “We have sent an application, signed by my mother half an hour ago, seeking permission to meet him.”

Asked where they plan to bury Mollah, he said, “Father wishes to be buried near our Faridpur village home.”
