The awful condition of the four-kilometre-long Gandimara Mor-Belgachi Old Bazar road under two upazilas in Rajbari has been causing great suffering to the users for years.

Locals said thousands of people, including students of Rajbari Sadar and Kalukhali upazilas use the road every day, facing serious problems. The suffering is beyond description when they need to take a critical patient to district headquarters, they added.

The road is four-kilometre-long, of which 2.6-kilometre are under Rajbari Sadar Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and 1.4-kilometre under Kalukhali LGED,  they said, adding that it has become almost unfit for vehicular movement due to lack of repair or renovation for long.

On a visit to the site on Saturday, this correspondent found a number of potholes on the road, which has become muddy in many places.

Shantonu Pramanik of Ragunathpur village said thousands of people use the road everyday as there is a railway station at Belgachi Old Bazar, two colleges, four high schools, a madrasa and four government primary schools beside the road, but they have to suffer a lot due to the dilapidated condition of the road.

Sharafat Mia, a trader of Datpur bazar said accidents occur almost regularly and a good number of vehicle owners have stopped operation on this route to avoid damage to the vehicles.

Sagor Sardar, a student at Belgachi Bikalpa College, said he comes from Modapur using the road, but they have to pay extra due to the awful condition of the road.

“Sand-laden ten-wheel trucks have been using this road for four months but the authorities concerned seem reluctant to take steps against the truckers. I have asked the LGED official to repair the road,” said Khanganj Union Parishad Chairman Atahar Hossain.

“State Minister for Ministry of Education Kazi Keramat Ali visited the site and allocated money from his personal fund for repairing the road. We shall use this money for filling the potholes,” said Rajbari Sadar Upazila Engineer Shapon Kumar Guho.
