Traffic Week: Over Tk 3 crore collected as fines till 5th day

Police so far have collected over Tk three crore from different vehicles for violating traffic rules in the first five days of the ongoing Traffic Week across the country till today.

The Traffic Week that started on Sunday will continue till August 11.

‘‘We fined a total of Tk 3,11,31, 698 to different vehicles for various violations of traffic rules including not having driving licenses and proper fitness certificates till today, Mohammad Sohel Rana, assistant inspector general of Police Headquarters, told The Daily Star.

The traffic policemen lodged cases against 97,046 vehicles till the fifth day of the Traffic Week for breaking traffic rules in six metropolitan police areas and eight ranges and highway ranges, he said.

Besides, legal actions have been taken against 34, 321 drivers for traffic rule violations like driving vehicles on the wrong-side, using hydraulic horns and for not carrying proper documents with them at the time of plying on the roads, said the police official.

The law enforcers also seized nearly 3,255 vehicles till today, said AIG Sohel Rana.

‘‘Traffic rule violation is an old problem in the country. Police are trying their best to improve the situation,” he added.
