Youth killed as truck hits him in Kurigram

The motorcyclist was speeding away ignoring signal of traffic policemen

A youth died as a truck hit his motorbike while it was speeding away ignoring the signal of traffic policemen in Kurigram yesterday.

Khairuzzaman Khokan, 25, was joint convener of Shilkhuri union unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, said Altaf Hossain, president of the union unit of Awami League.

Khokan, who was from Uttar Chhat Gopalpur village in Bhurungamari upazila, was going to Sonahat Land Port, said Bango Sonahat Union Parishad Chairman Shahjahan Ali Molla.

Traffic policemen signalled him to stop near Sonahat Degree College on Bhurungamari-Sonahat road, said police.

But, Khokan did not comply with the signal and rode away, said Imtiaz Kabir, officer-in-charge of Bhurungamari Police Station.

On his way, a truck hit him from the opposite direction, said the OC.

With head injuries, Khokan was rushed to Bhurungamari Upazila Health Complex where he was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

He died on the way to RMCH, said the officer.

Meanwhile, locals chased the traffic policemen who were later sheltered at Bango Sonahat Union Parishad office.

Later, a team from the police station rescued them, said the OC.
