Another held over ‘spreading rumours’ on Facebook

Law enforcers from Cyber Security and Crime Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested a youth over his alleged involvement in spreading rumours and inciting violence through his Facebook account during the recent student movement for safe roads.

Khaled Saifullah, 23, was arrested from Dakkshingaon bazar area under Sabujbagh Police Station on Thursday, according to DMP News.

In primary interrogation, Saifullah confessed to his involvement in spreading rumours and inciting violence to divert the students’ movement to other direction, said Md Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP.

In his attempt to destabilise the law and order situation, he uploaded “fabricated videos and inciting statuses” from his Facebook account, the police official said.

He was arrested in a case filed against him with Ramna Model Police Station under Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Act.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court placed Saifullah on a two-day remand in the case after police produced him before it.

Since the student demonstrations for safe roads began on July 29, more than 100 people, mostly students, have been held in 53 cases in the capital alone over “causing violence and spreading rumours”, according to DMP.
