A man today succumbed to his burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), a day after he was set on fire allegedly by his borrower in Fatullah upazila of Narayanganj.

Deceased Md Suman, 36, hailing from Majdail area of Fatullah, used to deal in jhut (scrap fabrics from garment factories), police said.

He was admitted to the burn unit of DMCH with 75 percent burns last night and succumbed to his injuries this morning, the hospital sources said.

Biplob, a fellow jhut trader of Fatullah, borrowed Tk 70,000 from Suman a few months ago and was not returning the money, Nahid Hasan, younger brother of the deceased, told reporters at the hospital.

Last night, Biplob called Suman around 8:00pm to his home saying that he would return the money, Nahid said.

As Suman reached Biplob’s house, Biplob, his wife Shayla and two other unidentified men swooped on him, Nahid alleged.

“At one stage, they threw kerosene at him and set him on fire,” Nahid told reporters.

Suman managed to run away while he was still on fire. Locals rushed him to a local clinic from where he was later shifted to DMCH as his condition deteriorated.

An autopsy was conducted on the body of the deceased this morning.

Contacted, Manjurul Quader, officer-in-charge of Fatullah Police Station, told The Daily Star that they have heard the about incident from the victim’s family.

The perpetrators have been absconding since the incident and police were trying to arrest them, the OC said, adding that filing of a case in this connection was underway.
