Helper arrested over businessman's death

Police Bureau of Investigation yesterday arrested the helper of a minibus in connection with a case filed over the death of Rezaul Karim Roni, a businessman from City Gate area near the port city, on August 27.

The arrestee, Mohammad Manik, 32, was held in Ramgati area of Laxmipur, said Inspector Santosh Chakma. He was hiding at his in-law's house.

On the day, following an altercation apparently over bus fare, the helper allegedly pushed Roni, 35, off the minibus in the area. He fell down and got stuck between the road and the vehicle. As the driver drove on, Roni was crushed under the rear wheels, his relatives said, quoting witnesses.

Shamsul Huda, Roni's cousin and member of Ward-9 of Salimpur Union Parishad at Sitakunda upazila, demanded that police arrest the driver immediately.

“We demand exemplary punishment for the driver and helper to avoid repetition of such incidents,” he said.

On Tuesday night, Roni's uncle filed the murder case against Didarul Alam, 35, driver of the minibus, and the helper, with Akbar Shah Police Station.
