RMG FACTORY BUILDINGS

BGMEA seeks info on structural design

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Saturday asked the authorities of all RMG factories to submit their structural design assessment and load management reports to it within a month.

The BGMEA also urged the general managers and top officials of the five readymade garment factories housed in the collapsed Rana Plaza to help the association by providing the list of the workers so that their salaries and dues can be paid smoothly.

The authorities concerned have been requested to contact AKM Shahjahan (01718379789) and Jaglul Haider (01817044678) for providing the names of the worker list.

BGMEA second vice president SM Mannan Kochi came up with the decision at a press conference at the BGMEA Bhaban in the evening after an emergency meeting of the BGMEA board.

Former BGMEA President Abdus Salam Murshedy was also present at the press conference.

He said the BGMEA and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) decided to float a fund - Disaster Relief Fund - to help the Savar building collapse victims and their families.

The BGMEA also asked the owners of all RMG units to shift the generators to the ground floor from the top floors.

Responding to a question, Murshedy said the RMG units across the country will go into production from Monday and sought support from all.

After the Tazreen fire incident, he said, the recent one has become a burden for them as well the industry. “If we work coordinately, we’ll be able to overcome the image crisis in the global market.”

Earlier, the BGMEA board held the meeting with its President M Atiqul Islam in the chair.

Former BGMEA President Abdus Salam Murshedi and BKMEA first vice president M Hatem were also present.
