The Satmasjid and Agargaon grid substations failed around 5:50am this morning causing blackouts in parts of Dhanmondi, Agargaon, Shyamoli and adjoining areas in the capital.

Confirming the development, a call centre executive, Md Shaheen, of the Dhaka Power Distribution Company told The Daily Star that they were trying their best to restore electricity transmission.

Meanwhile, the 230 kV grid line from Aminbazar-Agargaon also failed at 5:50am today -- leading to no electricity in the western part of Dhaka city, including the Mohammadpur and Mirpur areas, according to a UNB report.

"The grid transmission line tripped at 5:50am," Badruddoza Sumon, public relations officer of the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh, told UNB.

Further explaining, he said due to the dense fog, sometimes grid lines can break down. This is not a technical fault of the system, he added.

He informed that the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) engineers were trying hard to restore the system by checking transmission towers.

A resident of the city's Dhanmondi Satmasjid road told The Daily Star that they were experiencing power outage since 5:50am.

Another resident of Dhanmondi road 28 said, "Power outages on public holidays are very disappointing, that too from early morning. It's been more than four hours."

"Power went out around 6:00am, came back at 9:30 am, went out again for a short time, and then came back again," a resident of Zafrabad said.

Meanwhile, residents of Mohammadpur, Mirpur, and Indira road also reported that they are experiencing power outage since the same time.
