Transport workers of South Chattogram route observed a two-hour strike this morning demanding the renovation of Bahaddarhat Bus Terminal in the port city.

From a human chain at the bus terminal, they issued an ultimatum of June 7 to start the renovation work, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.

The workers threatened the government with tougher movement, if their demand was not met.

General Secretary of Arakan Road Transport Workers Union Mohammad Musa said the bus terminal's management committee and the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) have been requested many times to renovate the terminal but they did not pay any heed to their demands.

Hence, they were compelled to go on a strike from 11:00am to 1:00pm, he said.

Musa said, "During this time, buses and other public transport were halted on Chattogram-Cox's Bazar, Chattogram-Bandarban, and seven other southern upazila routes."

"We are sorry for the temporary inconvenience and suffering to the passengers but we had no option but to observe the strike."

"Bahddarhat Bus Terminal goes under knee-deep water during monsoons, damaging valuable parts of vehicles and increasing risk of accidents on the roads," he said.

There are no lights at the terminal and no toilets for transport workers and passengers.
