Probe body formed over ferry capsize in Paturia Ghat

The Shipping Ministry has formed a seven-member committee to investigate into the capsize of a ferry at Paturia Terminal in Manikganj today.

The body led by Sultan Abdul Hamid, additional secretary (development) of the ministry, was asked to submit its report within the next seven days, reads a shipping ministry circular.

The committee was also tasked to look into the other recent ferry accidents and give recommendation to improve the ferry services.

The other members of the committee are: Rafiqul Islam Talukder, director (ICT) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA); Captain Sayeed Ahmed, nautical surveyor and examiner of Shipping Department; deputy director of local government, Manikganj; Zobair Ibn Awal, associate professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department of BUET; Jasim Uddin, superintendent of River Police of Faridpur region, and Rashedul Islam, director (technical) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).

The circular said the ferry Shah Amanat, while anchoring the ferry, tilted and part of the ferry went into water. As a result, some vehicles on the ferry also went into the river around 9:30am today.
