22 members of transgender community get houses from govt

Twenty-two members of transgender community in Barguna received new houses as Eid gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today.

PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the third phase of Ashrayan Project around 10:00 am in Khajurtala through video conference, our Patuakhali correspondent reports.

In the third phase of the project in Sadar upazila, total 411 houses on two-decimal of land each were handed over to the beneficiaries.

Among the beneficiaries, 10 beggars, 20 physically challenged people, 28 divorced women, and 41 members of Hindu community received their new houses.

Of the third gender beneficiaries, Ratna, said, "I'm very happy to get a new house. We had no place in society. For the gift, I thank the prime minister."

Under the project, employment arrangements are also being made for these third gender people so that they can get the opportunity to come into the mainstream of society.

Also, plenty of trees will be planted in the project area.

Barguna Deputy Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman said that 725 new houses were allotted in the third phase in the district and out of them 411 were completed and handed over today.

He added that 232 houses have been allotted in the first phase and 193 houses in the second phase.

According to the Barguna Deputy Commissioner's Office, total land at the Khajurtala project in the upazila is 11.40 acres.
