Shaon died for democracy, people’s voting rights: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday said their party will give a reply to the killing of Munshiganj Jubo Dal activist Shahidul Islam Shaon by ousting the government.

In a brief address prior to Shaon's namaz-e-janaza in front of BNP's Nayaplatan central office in Dhaka, Fakhrul said the Jubo Dal activist sacrificed his life for the restoration of democracy and people's voting and other rights.

"So, we're taking a vow that we the people of Bangladesh will establish a pro-people government by removing the current despotic regime through united efforts. We'll be able to show proper respect for Shaon if we can do that," he said

The BNP leader prayed for the salvation of the departed soul of Shaon and conveyed his sympathy to the bereaved family members.

He said Judo Dal will arrange a protest rally in front of their Nayapaltan central office today.

Shaon, 27, who was injured during a clash between BNP men and police in Munshiganj on Wednesday, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday night.

He was on life support since 11:00pm Wednesday night. He had injuries in his head, said his younger brother Sohag. Shaon left behind a wife and a one-year-old son, Sohag told The Daily Star.
