The next national elections will be held under the current government with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the helm, said Information Minister Hasan Mahmud yesterday.

He said this while talking as the chief guest at a seminar organised by Dhaka University's Oceanography department on the occasion of World Ocean Day at DU.

"BNP's demand for a caretaker government has not received any support from anyone globally. So now they are talking about a 'neutral' government instead of a caretaker government. The current government will serve as the election-time government as it is the norm around the world," he said.

"When BNP was in power, the country used to generate 3,600 MW of electricity. Now we have the capacity to generate 18,000 to 20,000 MW of power. And when BNP was in power, only 40 percent of the people were under electricity coverage. Now 100 percent of the people are," the minister added.

Urging patience, the minister said the current power crisis due to fuel shortage will improve soon.

"The state minister for power said that this problem, caused by global recession and war, is temporary and it will be eased in 15-20 days," he added.
