UP polls: AL candidates win 76% chairman posts

Ruling Awami League (AL) candidates have won 76 percent chairman posts in 156 Union Parishad elections held yesterday.

The polls were earlier postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Elections were held at 160 union parishads but results of four UPs remain withheld due to different reasons including violence, Election Commission officials said today.

Independent chairman candidates won 23 percent chairman posts while candidates from Workers Party won the rest.

According to Election Commission statistics, AL candidates won in 119 UP chairman posts and of them 43 candidates were elected unopposed.

It also shows that 36 independent candidates won the election. Party insiders said that almost all of the independent candidates were rebel candidates of AL.

One from Workers Party of Bangladesh, won the chairman election.
