Nothing but a daydream

Quader on BNP’s plan to organise mass upsurge to oust govt

Ruling out BNP's dream of ousting the government through organising a mass upheaval, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said BNP is planning to organise a mass upsurge to topple the government, which is not only impossible, but also unrealistic.

"The background in 1990 and in 2021 is not same… so, BNP's plan of organising a movement aiming to oust the government is nothing but a daydream," he said.

The minister made this comment while addressing a press briefing at his residence in the capital.

Criticising a remark made by BNP's secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir that "allowing no more time to the government", Quader also secretary general of the ruling Awami League asked who is he [Fakrul] to allow the government in power?

"The constitution and the people of the country have allowed the government in power. The almighty and voters are the sole authority to allow someone in power," he said.

Quader alleged that BNP has made Jatiya Press Club a political stage.

"Different social and cultural organisations including journalists usually organise meetings there, but BNP has made it a political podium. BNP's political gathering inside the press club is totally illegal and unacceptable," he said.

Regarding the availability of driving licenses, the minister said, "Printing and distribution of nearly 12.50 lakh driving licenses have begun from October 10 and it would be completed within the next six months."

To reduce sufferings of people, the minister, however, gave directives to BRTA officials concerned to continue work during the weekly holiday for completion of the work.
