Mohibullah Babunagari named new amir of Hefajat

Mohibullah Babunagari has been declared the new amir of Hefajat-e-Islam.

Hefajat Secretary General Nurul Islam announced this before conducting the namaz-e-janaza of Junayed Babunagari at the Hathazari Madrasa around 10:45pm, Maulana Ahmedullah, former publicity secretary of Hefajat's Chattogram unit told The Daily Star.

Maulana Ahmedullah was present at the janaza.

Mohibullah is the maternal uncle of Junayed Babunagari, who died around 12:30pm today on his way to a hospital in the port city. He had suffered a brain stroke around 11:00am.

Born in February 1935, Mohibbullah Babunagari is a Deobandi Islamic scholar, politician and religious speaker.

He is the chief adviser of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Chancellor of Al-Jamiatul Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar.

In 2018, he resigned as vice-president of Islami Oikya Jote.

He was born in Babungar village of Daulatpur union under Chattogram's Fatikchhari upazila.

His father Harun Babunagari was a renowned Islamic scholar and the founder of Al-Jamiatul Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar.

Mohibullah completed his primary and secondary education at Al-Jamiatul Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar and higher secondary education at Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam. He went to Darul Uloom Deoband for higher studies and in 1959 completed his masters in Hadith.

After returning home, he was appointed a teacher in Al-Jamiatul Islamiah Azizul Uloom Babunagar under the supervision of his father.

On November 15, 2020, he was elected chief adviser to Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh. Earlier, he was the vice-president of this organisation.
