A local Awami League leader of Tulshirchar union in Jamalpur Sadar upazila was suspended from the party yesterday (September 9, 2022) for taking part in a human chain organised protesting for the price hike of fertilisers.

Md Saidur Rahman, general secretary of Ward-4 of Tulshichar union unit AL, was suspended from the party, reports our Mymensigh correspondent.

A letter was issued in this regard yesterday, signed by Tulshirchar Union unit AL President Md Saiful Islam and General Secretary Md Shamim Yasdani.

"On September 7, Saidur Rahman took to the streets of Garamara village along with some unscrupulous persons and formed a human chain where anti-government slogans were chanted," read the letter.

"In addition, he called journalists and made anti-government statements", it said, adding that it has tarnished the image of the party as those statements were spread on social platforms including Facebook.

"He has neglected his responsibility by taking anti-government steps even after holding a responsible position in AL," it stated.

He was also served with a show-cause notice and asked to explain within seven working days why he would not be suspended from the party permanently.

In the last 48 days in Jamalpur, 31 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate bodies have been suspended for violating party discipline.
