Gazipur city polls: EC satisfied with Azmat’s explanation

CEC says EC won’t launch any probe against the AL’s mayoral candidate

The Election Commission today said it is satisfied with the explanation given by the mayoral candidate of the ruling Awami League Azmat Ullah Khan in Gazipur City polls regarding his alleged violation of the electoral code of conduct.

Expressing satisfaction with the explanation, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said the EC will not launch any further probe against Azmat.

"We are yet to take any decisions....but we are satisfied with his explanation," the CEC said while talking with reporters at the Election Secretariat in Dhaka's Agargaon.

Earlier, as per a directive, Azmat came to the EC office and gave his explanation for the alleged violation of the electoral codes.

Awal said that Azmat politely gave his explanation and expressed his regret promising to be respectful of the electoral code of conduct in future.

Earlier, while interacting with reporters, Azmat said he did not violate the electoral code knowingly.

The EC issued the show cause notice to Azmat, also the president of Gazipur city AL, for violating the electoral rules while submitting his nomination papers on April 27.

At least 10 leaders and activists accompanied Azmat from the main entrance to the office of the returning officer. Many leaders and activists were rallying on the road at that time.

The Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25. The deadline for withdrawing candidacy is May 8.
