A Dhaka court today sent BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the party's Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas to jail in a case filed over Wednesday's clashes between BNP men and police in the capital's Nayapaltan area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim passed the order after rejecting their bail petitions filed with the court by the defence lawyers this evening.

The case was filed with Paltan Model Police Station on Thursday, after a clash took place on Wednesday between BNP men and police in front of the party's Nayapaltan head office.

Fakhrul and Abbas have been sent to jail on the eve of the party's divisional rally in Dhaka.
Earlier this afternoon, Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas were taken to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court.

The two BNP leaders were kept at the prison cell of the court after they were taken there around 4:10pm, reports our staff correspondent from the spot.

Plainclothes men identifying themselves as law enforcers picked up Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas from their homes around 3:00am, Sayrul Kabir Khan, member of the BNP's Media Cell told media.

Later, they were shown arrested in a case filed over Wednesday's clash between BNP men and police at Nayapaltan.

The two BNP leaders were shown arrested on charges of provoking party members to launch an attack on police in Nayapaltan area, DB chief Harun-Or-Rashid told reporters in front of DB office today.

After being picked up early this morning, Fakhrul and Abbas were brought to the DB office for questioning over the Nayapaltan incident.
