Case filed against Gazipur Mayor over remarks on Bangabandhu, freedom fighters

A case has been filed with Rajbari court against Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam over recent comments on Bangabandhu and martyred freedom fighters at a programme.

Acting as a plaintiff, Shashi Akter of Rajbari Police Lines area filed the case with the Rajbari-1 Judicial Magistrate Court yesterday.

Shoshi Akter is the president of Manobik Bangladesh Society's Rajbari Municipal Unit.

Confirming the matter, Uzir Ali Sheikh, public prosecutor of Rajbari Judge Court said that the court accepted the case and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter and submit the report within February 13.

Sheikh Md Mehedi Hasan, the plaintiff's lawyer, said Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Zahangir Alam recently made some controversial comments about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the number of martyred freedom fighters in a programme and the video went viral on social media.

For this reason, Shoshi has filed a case against Zahangir Alam under section 504/505/505(a) of the Penal Code, 1860 on Tuesday noon.

Section 504 states: "Whoever intentionally insults, and thereby gives provocation to any person, intending or knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause him to break the public peace, or to commit any other offence, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both".
